 Essays and Creative Writing

We are seeking stories, lyrical interpretations, music-related thoughts (e.g., what the Hose means to you; the changes in Phish's music over the years; etc.) and any other essays relevant to the Phish Experience for our book on Phish.

If you're looking for some sort of example, please read our Feature Essay on the Web.

Contributions may be of any length, but the shorter and sweeter, the better. The more contributions from different fans that we receive, the more the book will reflect our diverse and unique musical and social experiences. We really hope that you contribute!!!!!!!

Please title your contribution(s), state the author, and provide the author's city and state.
For example:

"Caspian's Seventh Wave: the Evolution of the Prince"
Chandrilian Dirksekhaar, San Francisco, CA

By sending ellis@netspace.org or mockingbird@netspace.org your submission(s), you agree to permit The Mockingbird Foundation to publish it or them as part of the book. Please also, though, explicitly state in your email that we may use your submission in the book. The Foundation is a nonprofit organization and will not profit from the book (proceeds will go to charities).

One of the goals of this nonprofit project is to improve the public image of Phish fans. Please understand that references to illegal drugs, gate-crashing, etc., and the use of foul language, reflect poorly on our maturity, and give credence to the many stereotypes of Phish fans promulgated by local and national media.

You will be contacted if any substantive (non-grammatical) changes to your piece must be made in order to publish it. Please understand that, in all likelihood, not all submissions received will be published.

Please email your submission(s) to ellis@netspace.org or mockingbird@netspace.org. For non-electronic submission, please use:

    The Mockingbird Foundation, Inc.
    PO Box 1483
    Brookline, MA 02146

You may certainly include more than one submission in a single email or envelope, and you are encouraged to do so if possible.

Any inquiries may be directed to ellis@netspace.org.

Management of the this section of the book has changed hands from Charlie Dirksen to Kim Hannula to Ellis Godard, but the collection and status of all essays remained unchanged in the book's publication process. Ellis has everything that Charlie or Kim ever received; there is no need to re-send your essay.

We look forward to your submission(s)! Please contribute! The more you do for this book, the better it will be (and the sooner you send in a submission, the more you will be helping out).
