UPDATE: The time for submissions to the Second Edition has passed, but
we are already accepting content for the Third! Send it our way...
April 21, 2003 (Updated from first posting on 11/15/01; 2nd posted 12/1/02)
The Mockingbird Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money to benefit music education for children, is seeking content for the Second Edition of the Phish Companion.
The Foundation was formed by Phish fans in 1997 and has since raised over $200,000. The Foundation's primary projects have been the Phish Companion, the most comprehensive book on Phish's music and history ever compiled, and Sharin' in the Groove, a charity cover album featuring Phish songs interpreted by many diverse artists, including Dave Matthews, Little Feat, Jimmy Buffett, The Wailers and many more. With the gracious support of Phish fans, the Phish Companion has sold more than 30,000 copies, and Sharin' in the Groove has sold more than 20,000 copies.
As Phish is just returning from hiatus, Mockingbird has yet to set an exact date for the printing of the Second Edition of the Companion. But in the meantime the Foundation presses on, and we are eager to begin compiling new material for the Second Edition from fans everywhere. We welcome and encourage you to submit any of the following:
- REVIEWS of Phish shows (whether reviewed in the First Edition or not);
- RATINGS of Phish shows, using a specially provided spreadsheet
- SHOW NOTES for the setlists (interesting points about shows that should be mentioned beneath their setlists);
- TOUR STORIES, ESSAYS, SONG ANALYSES, or CREATIVE PHISHY WRITING;
- PHOTOS, black and white prints or 300dpi Photoshop or TIF files with good contrast and detail preferred;
- DESCRIPTIONS OF VENUES not appearing in the First Edition;
- TIMINGS and brief descriptions of notable versions of Phish songs that JAM, to append the "Jamming Songs" data in the First Edition;
- REVISIONS, corrections, additions to the First Edition, including new DICTIONARY and GUEST BOOK entries;
- ANYTHING ELSE you think should be in the Second Edition.
Contributions may be of any length, but the shorter and sweeter, the better. Please title reviews, stories, and related submission(s) appropriately, and provide the author's first and last names, and city and state.
Please submit contributions to mockingbird@mockingbirdfoundation.org (best method). Hard copies may be sent to:

By submitting a contribution, you agree to permit the Mockingbird Foundation to edit and publish it as part of the Second Edition of the Phish Companion. Nevertheless, please tell us explicitly when you email your contribution that the Foundation may use it in the Second Edition. The Foundation is a non-profit organization, and no one involved with it will benefit financially from the book in any fashion. All of our profits go directly to music education for children. You will be contacted if any substantive (non-grammatical) changes to your submission must be made in order to publish it. Keep in mind as well, of course, that not all submissions received will be published. We will try, as we have in the past, to thank everyone who contributes in any way to the Companion in the book.
We look forward to your contributions, and thank you for helping benefit music education for children!
