Schenectady, NY... The Schenectady Symphony Orchestra will team with students from the Shenendehowa High School Orchestra to present a free community concert at 7 p.m. Saturday. The concert is the culmination of a three-month residency that paired the symphony's concertmaster and string quartet with student musicians for individual and group coaching. The program was funded by a $5,000 grant from the Mockingbird Foundation, an organization founded by fans of the band Phish. "Our students have worked both individually with SSO concertmaster Michael Emery and with members of a string quartet to improve their skills,'' said Mary Chase, director of Shenendehowa's orchestra and a member of the SSO. The hourlong concert, to be held in the Shenendehowa High School West auditorium, will feature Rossini's "Barber of Seville'' Overture, Mozart's Symphony No. 25 in G Minor, Barber's "Adagio for Strings,'' Holst's "St. Paul's Suite for String Orchestra'' and selections from "Phantom of the Opera'' by Andrew Lloyd Weber. SSO Music Director Charles Schneider will conduct the combined orchestras. The concert is free. Call 372-2500 for more information. |
